You hear it everyday, in every newspaper, and on the television channel, the earth is deteriorating right before our very eyes. But, what does this mean to you and me? How often do we actually take the time to assess the damage of our own gluttony and greed? Not that often, as it seems the world is going downhill in an ever increasing spiral. All over the world the signs are evident. Although global warming might not be proven theory yet we can still see many other consequences to our actions. Every time you eat swordfish for example you are creating to an ever-increasing problem with over-fishing. Fisherman would love to tell you that they are catching more fish these days than ever before with their high tech gadgets and super fast boats, but the fact of the matter remains that these fish are becoming smaller and younger than those caught in previous decades. Also, the fisherman must go to great lengths to catch these fish risking their own lives to do so.
Another example is our increasing need to fulfill housing needs. How often do we see track homes these days which in turn give rise to strip malls and the like? Along with these new houses we have to have every little extras. Baths for example are a good case to argue against. When was the last time you used your bath? Not to often most likely as the average household these days uses it 3 times a year. Think of all the materials it took to fabricate and install those Jacuzzi tubs, most of which pollute like crazy into our river systems as they are made in chemical and industrial plants. Lets also not forget how much water they use. And people complain in southern California about water shortages?
That’s not all though. Best of all, we have to have 2 SUVs in every garage now days. All of which are not economical at all. This earth only has so much oil in a set number of caverns. And now we wonder why we like the Saudis all of a sudden? Of course we are all familiar with the gas discharge and the Ozone and all that jazz, but I would argue that SUVs are part of an increasing traffic problem. They hinder view from behind and lack mobility and safe breaking distances there by slowing traffic down in 360 degrees of direction. Add to this fact that almost everyone on the road these days and people wonder why traffic is so bad on the freeways. So what you ask? We’ve heard this argument before…blah blah blah save the earth right, blah blah pick up garbage and recycle I do my part you say! Well do you honestly think that the earth will be the same as it is now just because you recycled 2 cans of soda last week?
We seriously need to reevaluate what is important to us and what isn’t these days, if we want the earth and the places we hold dear to our memories to be the intact and similar to the way they are now. What do you hold dear on this earth? Do you want it to be here? Is the legacy we leave for our children and their children the fact they don’t have a home that’s livable anymore? I don’t really think going all out hippy or Greenpeace in the upcoming election is the right way to go, but I do know that our president to date isn’t doing a great job of conservation. Money is tangible object or piece of paper that has value because we say and believe it has value….when do we apply the same principle to the earth?
